We encourage every Katy patient we see to undergo an initial oral examination so that our general dentists can assess our patients’ teeth and overall oral health. Dental exams allow us to pinpoint specific issues within the mouth, whether cavities, gum disease, or other dental problems.
WHAT IS DONE DURING A DENTAL EXAM?
Our general dentist in Katy conducts a thorough dental examination of every patient’s mouth. During this procedure, we utilize X-rays to see within the teeth and the gums to check the internal health of the jawbone and teeth. This allows us to check for major issues, like tumors and cysts, that otherwise can’t be seen with the naked eye.
At the end of the dental exam, the dentist is able to address all issues the patient is currently experiencing or could experience in the future. We are able to identify periodontal disease (gum disease), weak teeth, problems with wisdom teeth, and cavities. We are also able to provide a timeline for if and when certain dental procedures should be administered, like dental crowns, dental fillings, or the potentiality of a root canal.
WHEN SHOULD DENTAL EXAMS BE CONDUCTED?
Dental exams and dental cleanings should be conducted every six months. Of course, during this six month span, patients should be brushing twice per day and flossing every day. This is to ensure that there is not major buildup of plaque on teeth that can create cavities and gum disease. During the dental examination, our dentists and dental hygienists thoroughly clean teeth and remove hardened plaque that can’t be removed by brushing or flossing.
