Cavities are the primary cause for dental issues. Due to a lack of oral maintenance or simply by incident, cavities can negatively affect a tooth. At our Energy Corridor dental office, we provide dental sealants, which are designed to protect the teeth of children and adults alike from the possibility of cavities.
HOW CAVITIES SPREAD
When food particles and sugars are not brushed out or flossed out, then they turn into plaque. Plaque buildup can begin to eat away at the enamel of teeth, which is the teeth’s natural protective layering. Once this layer is dissolved by the acidic properties of plaque, then cavities start forming. Cavities then have to be addressed by dental fillings. In the event that the cavities are not addressed in a timely fashion, then they can spread deeper and wider creating the need for either dental crowns, root canals, or even tooth extraction.
HOW DENTAL SEALANTS STOP CAVITIES
At Houston Dental Esthetics, we consider dental sealants to be the second protective layer. They are there to protect the initial enamel and overall tooth. This doesn’t mean, however, that the teeth can go without proper oral maintenance, like brushing twice per day, flossing every day, and receiving a dental cleaning every six months. Teeth must continue to be properly cleaned daily in order to allow the dental sealants to work their best.
Keep in mind that these dental coverings do not last a lifetime. These protective dental layers last approximately two years and then must be replaced with new dental sealants.
Utilizing dental sealants do not obstruct the natural use of teeth, like chewing and talking. The coverings will help preserve the strength and health of teeth.
